This case report describes an atypical presentation of neosporosis in a dog that initially presented as bilateral temporal muscle atrophy. Following initiation of prednisolone treatment for the 2002-01-01 ATROPHY OF THE FRONTALIS AND TEMPORALIS MUSCLE By: Karen Finlay July 26, 2017 The facial muscles of mammals are very complex and variable. Additionally, the dog was “polydipsic”; however, a urine specific gravity was elevated (1.055), suggesting that the dog was only attempting to drink, rather than successfully drinking, water. Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is an immune system disorder in which the dog’s immune system identifies the dog’s own muscle tissue as foreign and attacks it.
There is a blood test that was developed at the University of California at San Diego that will test for these antibodies. A biopsy from the temporalis muscle is also recommended to determine the severity of masticatory muscle myositis. Masticatory muscle atrophy can result from impaired innervation due to lesion of the motor branch of CN V, lesion affecting the masticatory muscles themselves or Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is an inflammatory disease in dogs affecting the muscles of mastication (chewing). It is also known as atrophic myositis or 23 Aug 2020 The masticatory muscles are the muscles used in mastication (chewing), nerve will lead to marked atrophy of the muscles of mastication. The dog seems to be painful when his mouth opens or when he attempts to chew.

The jaw could be voluntarily closed by the dog. Sensation to the right side of the face (canthus, cornea, nostril, upper and lower lips) was absent. Right enophthalmos was present but no anisocoria was noted in either a light or darkened room. MRI of the head revealed atrophy of the muscles of the right side, as compared with the left, including the masseter, temporalis, digastricus, and pterygoid muscles. In anatomy, the temporal muscle, also known as the temporalis, is one of the muscles of mastication. It is a broad, fan-shaped muscle on each side of the head that fills the temporal fossa, superior to the zygomatic arch so it covers much of the temporal bone. Temporal refers to the head's temples. Unilateral MM atrophy.
