Ossian was the name given to the author of a series of Gaelic epic poem fragments that had been discovered and translated into English in Goethe’s time. 2018-11-27 2021-04-24 Goethe was born August 28, 1749, in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, to a wealthy, middle-class family. He was educated at home by his father and tutors until 1765, when he was sent to Leipzig to study law, his father's profession. Goethe had shown his literary talent even as a child. It is interesting that Werther-Goethe discovered a prin-ciple (15th August 1771) which Rudyard Kipling was to put into practice in his Just so Stories. And it is amusing to find Werther advising a poet to let his own work alone; for Goethe did not take his hero’s advice.
